About Us
Decolonize Market is a cooperative that seeks to bridge the gap between natives and detribalized members, Latinx and Chicanx, and everything in between to have a space where no matter where we fall on our diaspora’s spectrum, we can be supported and welcome to buy and sell products we feel shed light on the endless ways the Western Hemisphere’s Indigenous People took care of the land, practiced sustainability, spread knowledge, healed one another, practiced herbalism, cultivation, and community building.
The founders Maurice Montoya and Manuel Montoya are communications college graduates from Sacramento State University, where they took two Ethnic Studies courses that inspired them to learn more about their roots as “Mexican-Americans” whose families came from New Mexico. As they began to decolonize themselves, they realized that their cultural and ethnic pride blossomed, their knowledge grew, they found ways they can heal themselves and others, and most importantly it brought them a sense of purpose they never had.
They founded Decolonize Market with the intention of inviting others who either recognize their indigenous roots or seek to learn more about their indigenous roots by either buying products that are good for them and the Mother Earth or sell them alongside other extremely talented vendors of this cooperative.
